Take a peek at this gorgeous family I’m lucky enough to call my sweet friends! Being a Prosper, TX Family photographer: (Snapberry Photographs), I met Ashley years ago, when her first kiddo was born and I photographed her as a newborn. I had my third baby just a few weeks later and the rest is history. We’ve since navigated through nearly 7 moves between our two families and I always know she’s just a text away. (We even briefly both lived in my home state of Minnesota for a short year!)

Ashley nailed her family’s outfit styling! Let me break it down for y’all with some quick tips to make the process smooth and easy for your next session.

First, I always recommend starting with your own outfit first, moms! Sometimes it can be the hardest decision to land on, so once you find something that YOU love, use that as the first building block as you gather the rest of the pieces for your family. The best advice I can give you here is to wear something you are comfortable in and something that isn’t out of the ordinary from your normal styling (for instance, if you NEVER wear ruffle sleeves, don’t choose a ruffle sleeve top because it’s trendy!).

Two, remember to coordinate, but not match. Not every person in your family has to have all colors in your scheme present in their outfit. As you can see, mom is the only one wearing the muted green, but when combined with the denim jacket, it pulls it right along with her husband’s jeans and blue shirt.

Three, include patterns! Don’t get too crazy, I usually recommend 2-3 patterns depending on how many people are in your family. Another point to consider is the ages of your children. If they are babies/younger toddlers and will be held for much of the session, make sure patterns don’t clash on that child with mom or dad.

Four, layers are your next best friend! While this can’t always be done well in Texas summers or hot falls, layering is one of the easiest ways to add more visual interest without introducing too many patterns. And, it’s a great way to pull outfit colors together such as Ashley did here with her husband’s vest and daughter’s dress.
